FormulasS = stake, D₁ = original, D₂ = hedge (decimal)
Equal profit: H = S × D₁ ÷ D₂
Break-even: H = S ÷ (D₂ − 1)
Profit if original wins = S(D₁ − 1) − H
Profit if hedge wins = H(D₂ − 1) − S

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does hedging a bet mean?

Placing a second bet on the opposite outcome so you win something either way. With $100 on +300 and the other side now −200, a hedge of $266.67 locks in $33.33 whichever side wins.

What is an equal-profit hedge?

The hedge stake that leaves you with the same result whichever outcome happens: original stake × original decimal odds ÷ hedge decimal odds.

What is a break-even hedge?

The smallest hedge that gets your original stake back if the hedge wins, while keeping most of the upside. In the example above it is $200.00: you profit $100.00 if the original bet wins and break even otherwise.

Should I hedge a futures bet?

It depends on how much certainty is worth to you. $100 on +1000 hedged at −500 locks in $83.33 either way with a $916.67 hedge. Hedging always gives up some expected value to the bookmaker’s margin on the second bet.
